The rumors have finally come to fruition. After early leaks tipped Google’s hand, today they’ve rolled out a major overhaul of their core G Suite product, Gmail. It’s smarter, more secure, and just might save you from looking stupid. It’s the best thing to happen to email since, well, the original Gmail.

Something Old

I’ll be honest, when I logged into my Gmail account for the first time after opting in to the new interface I thought “Huh. That’s it?” The first thing you’ll notice is that the user interface is nicely refreshed, benefiting from Google’s Material Design aesthetic. It’s crisp, modern, and fits nicely with Google’s other refreshed apps like Docs and Sheets. But at its core, the new Gmail looks mostly like the same old Gmail I’ve used for years.

“That was intentional,” Jacob Bank, Gmail Product Manager, told me. “We didn’t want people to freak out when they opened the new Gmail for the first time. We wanted there to be a discovery process for the new features.”
